La cantante estadounidense de hip hop Lauryn Hill, desde un escenario utilizado por el Papa, conmocionó a la cúpula católica en un concierto al decirles que se "arrepintieran" y aludió a los abusos sexuales contra niños protagonizados por sacerdotes en Estados Unidos.
Lauren Hill, de 28 años, formaba parte del elenco de músicos seleccionados para el concierto de Navidad, un acto organizado por el Vaticano desde hace 11 años para recaudar fondos destinados a la reparación de iglesias. El concierto se celebró el sábado, asistieron unas 7.500 personas y será retransmitido el día de Navidad por televisiones de todo el mundo. Canale 5, encargada de grabarlo y de emitirlo en Italia, suprimirá probablemente la emisión de la parte del discurso de Hill.
Hill realizó sus comentarios cuando tomó el micrófono para cantar, en la misma enorme estancia y escenario que el Papa Juan Pablo II utiliza para sus audiencias semanales y otros eventos. El Papa no estaba presente.

La mayoría de los presentes interpretaron esta referencia como una alusión al escándalo en Estados Unidos durante el pasado año sobre los abusos sexuales a niños cometidos por sacerdotes. Pero dijo más. Hill exhortó a la multitud que buscase bendiciones "de Dios y no de los hombres" y dijo que ella no creía "en representantes de Dios en la tierra", en una postura coincidente con la doctrina bíblica protestante.
